The Government is planning €3 billion adjustments (mostly spending cuts) in Budget 2011. Cutting vital public services, taxing low paid workers, cutting social welfare and capital investment are being presented as the only options to reduce the budget deficit. The Community Platform rejects this notion and presents real alternatives in the form of tax reform that will both address the budget deficit and stimulate economic recovery.

Not only is the current tax system failing to generate sufficient revenue to most well off or take action to begin to develop a just, equitable and sustainable tax system.

The Community Platform is calling on Minister Lenihan to:

1.         Reduce tax breaks for the wealthy to EU levels

2.         Introduce a Property Wealth Tax for high earners with assets worth more than €1million

3.         End Tax Exile loopholes by making citizenship the basis for taxation for high earners

4.         Apply PRSI and income levies to all income, regardless of source

About 30 people attended an information session for pregnant women and parents of pre-school children. It was held on the August,31^st in the Polish Social & Legal Advice Centre. The session covered subjects of health care, childcare, social welfare and employment rights of pregnant women and parents.

AkiDwA has issued a publication on access to employment and education for migrants.

This booklet is useful for non-EEA migrants who are stamp 4 holders and should help navigate way through the different schemes and support structures that are in place for those accessing the labour market and further and higher education. The production of this booklet was made possible with funding received by AkiDwA from the Equality for Women Measure 2009-2010.

Cairde took part in a radio show Global Village on Newstalk last Saturday. We discussed the issues of ethnic minority people related to accessing health services in Ireland. During the programme a former Cairde’s client texted the show saying that he is a living testimony of Cairde’s effective work. Click here to listen back to the programme.

Training for the memebers of Women’s and Men’s groups in our centre in Balbriggan has just finished. It covered the subjects of personal development, computers, CV and job interview skills, and mental health as well as women’s and men’s health.

The areas for training were identified by the participants. Over 30 people took part.

Thirty people participated in an information session delivered in Cairde’s office to Chinese living in Dublin. The session covered subjects such as accessing GP, hospital services, medical card/ GP visit card and women’s health.

It is the first of a series of information sessions in the Chinese language planned for this year. Next is scheduled for the Autumn.

On June, 16^th Iryna Pokhilo of Cairde spoke at the Drug Awareness Information Meeting for Migrant Organisations. She gave an overview of migrants’ experiences of accessing health services in Ireland, in particular addiction services.

The event was organised by Family Support Network. Other speakers included Lord Mayor of Dublin Cllr Emer Costello and Diane Nurse, National Planning Specialist, Social Inclusion HSE.
